Manna Monument Meerwaldtplantsoen Amsterdam

The artwork Manna was made by Ram Katzir.

The artwork symbolizes the Swedish white bread, which British soldiers distributed to starving Dutchmen during the Hunger Winter of 1945 in an operation called "Operation Manna" . In the same year, British and American soldiers threw food parcels down from bombers. These packets were also called Manna, a biblical term meaning "food that falls from heaven."

Meerwaldtplantsoen is located in a neighborhood in which all streets are named after resistance heroes. The new work of art should not only serve as a monument, but also as a meeting place. "Perhaps in the future an annual freedom meal could be organized on May 5," the congregation wrote in a letter to the neighborhood, "with people bringing food from their own culture to share."
