Ronald Balfour

Ronald Balfour was one of the Monuments Men. Ronald Edmond Balfour was a major and art conservation officer in the British Army. He was the first of The Monuments Men to die in action. He died on March 10, 1945 in Kleve.
Ronald Balfour is buried in the opposite cemetery.

The Liberation Route follows the path taken by the Allies during the liberation of Europe. The route starts at Normandy and runs via Nijmegen and Arnhem towards Berlin. At the end of the Second World War, the Arnhem Nijmegen region played a leading role on the world stage. During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, one of the largest airborne operations in history took place here.

The Liberation Route lets you experience what happened in 1944 and 1945 around Arnhem and Nijmegen. There are so-called listening points at many locations in the wider area. At every listening point you can listen to a radio play about the impressive experiences of one or more people in the years ’44-’45. The MP3 players can be rented at VVV NL Shop Arnhem, VVV NL Shop Nijmegen / Nijmegen Uitburo, Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein' and the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945.
