Castle Doorwerth

During Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem, there was also heavy fighting at Doorwerth Castle. During those battles, the castle and its surroundings were heavily destroyed.

On September 20, 1944, the castle was used by the Germans for defense to the west. The castle and the surrounding area were heavily shelled by the Allies on 25 September to allow a crossing of British soldiers the following day. The British were then supplied with containers with parachutes, but these quickly fell into German hands around the castle.

Such a supply parachute was hung back on a tower of the castle as a memento of those events. Until October 30, 2021, attention will be paid to this black war period in a small exhibition at Doorwerth Castle: 'The War visits the castle'.

The exhibition provides insight into and after the war period, when little of the castle remained. It eventually took 37 years to restore and rebuild it.
