Commonwealth War Cemetery in Uden
This Commonwealth War Cemetery was established in 1941. Many Allied planes were shot down around Uden during the war. Killed crew members from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Poland were buried here.

Uden was liberated on 19 September 1944 during Operation Market Garden. After that, a continuous stream of vehicles passed through the village, in the direction of Nijmegen. The village was spared heavy fighting. Many Commonwealth soldiers were, however, killed in the surrounding area. Most were first given a temporary grave and were then reburied here in 1946.

In the end, 701 soldiers of the British Commonwealth and two Polish soldiers found their final resting place in the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Uden. Every year they are commemorated by the residents of Uden on Remembrance Day, November 11th.


Liberation Route Europe is a certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. With hundreds of sites and stories in nine European countries, the route links the main regions along the advance of the Allied Forces in 1943-1945.
The entire route consists of themed routes that can be travelled by by hiking, walking, cycling and car. These routes pass numerous historical and interesting sites and tell stories from a multitude of perspectives that were important in the final phase of World War II.

A separate group within the routes are the Vectors of Memory designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. They form a symbolic family of landmarks that honor people, places and stories in the European landscape. The vectors are a topography of memory. They act as points in both space and time and connect to the liberation story. It is important that the markers convey a clear and powerful message.

- The Crossroads Vector
- The Wall Vector
- The Floor Vector
