Memorial Rue Jean van Volsem 40

On the facade of house no. 40 hangs a memorial plaque, an initiative of the Local History Circle Ixelles.

"This house, a refuge for those in hiding, created by the Andries-Lassons, housed Marcel Demonceau, 3 of his agents (GL group Hotton) and 3 airmen from the RAF.

On June 30, 1943, at dawn, 200 police officers and German soldiers attacked the shelter and the neighborhood. The resistance fighters fought back fiercely for 3 hours.
Marcel Demonceau broke through the blockade and was captured after a 12-day hunt. The others surrendered after their ammunition ran out.
