This crematorium in the town of Weimar cremated 3,500 prisoners from Buchenwald concentration camp during the period from August 1937 to August 1940. As the original ovens had been irreparably damaged by large-scale use, they were replaced in December 1940 by ovens made by Topf & Söhne, the firm that was also responsible for the crematorium ovens in the concentration camps. From mid-1940, Buchenwald camp had its own crematorium, so the city crematorium no longer needed to be used.
