Memorial Raid Beverwijk

Text on the black stone plaque with the text in gold letters:
'On 16 April 1944, 486 young men from here were taken away by the occupying forces, many of whom never returned'.

On 16 April 1944, a raid was carried out by the Sicherheitsdienst. A total of 486 men aged 16 to 30 from Beverwijk, Heemskerk and Velsen were transported via the railway station to Camp Amersfoort. Via Amersfoort, they were deported to various German camps such as Braunschweig, Nietleben, Schkopau, Ammendörf and Zöschen. But 65 of them did not survive the camps, and did not return to Beverwijk. The raid was a reprisal measure for, among other things, a number of attacks on NSB members in Beverwijk and Velsen, the latest being the fatal attack on NSB group leader S. J. de Graaf. Through the efforts of Frans Bruijns, among others, this memorial stone was placed on 16 April 1969. In 2005, on the initiative of Jan Schrama, a plaque was placed below, listing all the names of the 65 victims.
