Saxony-Weimarbarracks Arnhem

The barracks was intended for the IInd battalion of the 8th Infantry Regiment (II-8 RI), but it was only completed after the German invasion in May 1940. The Germans were the first permanent residents. In the years 1943-1944 the SS-Unterführerschule Arnheim was located here.

On September 17, 1944, the Saxony-Weimark Barracks was attacked from the air. Operation Market Garden was started with the aim of capturing the Rhine and Maas bridges. The Saxony-Weimark Barracks was damaged as a result. The roofs of accommodation buildings and the main building in particular showed holes. Bullet impacts can still be seen around the gate of the main building.

After the Netherlands was liberated, the 14th Infantry Battalion, part of the Menno van Coehoorn Regiment, was stationed in the barracks until 1960. In 1960, 11 Infantry Battalion Guard Regiment Grenadiers (GG) took over. In 1991, the 11 Horse Artillery Division (11 AfdRA) was stationed here. The barracks were disposed of in 1999.

After this, there was an asylum seeker center here for several years. After the asylum seeker center was closed, many artists had their studio space here. There were also several small companies here as well as a gliding club.

The barracks were sold by Domeinen to the municipality of Arnhem in November 2007. In 2012, renovation and new construction began.
