Information Sign former Monestary Mariendaal Groesbeek

This information board recalls the history of the largely demolished Mariendaal monastery. Part of this originally German monastery was requisitioned as a Luftschutzschule by the mayor on behalf of the Germans on 21 June 1943. Nazi Reich Commissioner Seyss Inquart came to inspect the school himself. On 6 September 1944, further rooms were requisitioned to house German soldiers and from 14 September it was set up as a military hospital.

At the start of Market Garden on 17 September 1944 Market Garden, the hospital was used by the Americans and a small chapel was set up in the basement. Many refugees from Breedeweg and De Horst were also housed in the basement. On 1 October 1944, everyone was evacuated to Uden.
