Memorial Captain L.R. Bradford & Craftsman W.H. Devine

About this spot, on July 20, 1944, Captain Lawrence Bradford and Craftsman William Devine of the SAS died when their jeep in which they were traveling came under fire from a convoy of German soldiers.

Both men were part of A Squadron 1st Special Air Service (SAS) and had been dropped in as part of Operation Houndsworth on June 21, 1944, for the purpose of conducting reconnaissance and sabotage operations. The other occupants of the jeep managed to escape with the help of the resistance.

Both men are buried in Crain's Municipal Cemetery.
