Peace Pole Aalst

There is a peace pole with an accompanying information board on the Esplanadeplein in Aalst.

"The Peace Pole is the international symbol for the call for world peace.
World peace, based on respect for others and the development of all peoples, stands for a tolerant society with attention to human rights and the guarantee of the right to freedom of expression. On the pole you can read the message "May peace reign on earth" in different languages.

The Peace Pole on Esplanadeplein was inaugurated on October 27, 1989 at the initiative of the Peace House Aalst and in collaboration with the city. At that time it was the fifth in Flanders. The monument is made of Japanese wood, in memory of the victims of the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945."
