This building was built in 1859/1864 based on a design by Allard Pierson. Due to constant understaffing, the prison was closed in 1925. The district court, which shared the building with the prison, was also closed in 1933.
After the Second World War, the prison was used for the internment of collaborators, including Jan Dekker (NSB leader in Zeeland). The complex has been partially demolished and is now a national monument.
