On the site of this memorial, Halifax bomber MZ289 KN-X of 77 Squadron RAF crashed on 2 November 1944. The aircraft had left RAF Full Sutton, East Riding of Yorkshire for a mission to Dusseldorf and was shot down by a German night fighter on the way back.
The entire crew consisting of:

Pilot R.E.B Pike, RCAF
Bomb Aimer Y.J. Lazier, RCAF
Radio operator F.J. Judges, RCAF
Gunner W.H. Hanes, RCAF
Gunner W.W. Lankin RCAF
Flight Engineer E.J. Payne, RAF
was killed in this incident. They are buried at Hotton War Cemetery.
