Plaque at the Willem-Hikspoorbridge, with the following text:
Willem-Hikspoorbridge
in remembrance of 19 September 1944
God spaarde ons ongedacht
Door deze zwakke brug
Haar zwakheid was haar kracht
Hier moest de vijand terug
21 September 1944
Located across the Dommel River between Nuenen and Eindhoven, the bridge was on the route of the 107th German Panzer Brigade on its way to stop the British advance in September 1944. The story goes that the gardener of the nearby Soeterbeek castle told the German scouts that the bridge could only support 8 tonnes and was therefore unsuitable for tanks. The Germans therefore decided to avoid the bridge and choose another route.
