Dutch War Graves Soestbergen Cemetery

Soestbergen General Cemetery contains 18 Dutch war graves from the Second World War. It concerns 3 soldiers, 10 resistance fighters and 11 victims.

Military:
Lodewijk Christiaan Cnopius, cavalryman St.-1-R.H. Killed in action on 14-05-1940 in Zuilen.
Jan Marinus Korsten, sergt. 1-I-11 R.A. Died on 15-05-1940 in Utrecht.
Louis Veenendaal, dpl. sold. 3-V-2 Lv.R. Killed in action on 10-05-1940 in Rijswijk (ZH).

Resistance fighters:
Johan Dons, painter. Executed on 09-07-1942 in Bunnik, Fort Rijnauwen.
Wessel te Gussinklo, watchmaker. Shot and killed on 07-10-1944 during a raid in Utrecht.
Hendrik Gijsbert de Kogel, dairyman. Executed on 18-09-1944 in Utrecht, Fort De Bilt.
Jacob Nienhuis, rubber planter. Executed on 30-01-1945 in Utrecht, Rijndijk.
Cornelis Hadrianus Schuckink Kool, lawyer. Died on 30-11-1942 in Kamp Amersfoort.
Johannes van der Slikke, student. Executed on 30-01-1945 in Utrecht, Rijndijk.
Adriaan Jacobus Smits, expedition assistant. Executed on 07-10-1944 in Jutphaas.
Marius Jan Elisa van der Veen, civil servant. Executed on 08-03-1945 in Apeldoorn, Woeste Hoeve.
Jakob Vos, cheese merchant. Executed on 02-12-1944 in Apeldoorn, Koning Willem III barracks.
Pieter Zuijdendorp, typographer. Executed on 15-09-1944 in Utrecht, Fort De Bilt.

War casualties:
Johannes Hubertus de Fiouw, bench worker hand. Died 3 May 1943 in Berlin, Germany
Bernard Wilhelm Fischer, factory worker. Killed on 23 March 1945 in Lichtenvoorde. He was only 17 years old.
Maria Elisabeth Janssen, saleswoman. Died 3 May 1945 in Berlin, Germany.
Johannes Hendrikus de Jong, orderer P.T.T. Died on December 29, 1944 in Bilthoven.
Dr. Peter Karl Theodor Lens. Killed on April 12, 1944 in Utrecht.
Cornelis Meijneke, metal turner. Died on October 15, 1942 in Oranienburg.19 years old. Reburied at the Loenen Ereveld.
Wilhelmina Marie (Rie) van Wijk, bookseller. 27 years.
Maria Margaretha (Mimi) van Wijk, bookseller. 25 years.
On Whit Monday, May 28, 1944, Rie van Wijk and her sister Mimi were on their way to their aunt in Venlo by train. Between Maarsbergen and De Klomp, the train was shot at by an Allied aircraft, resulting in 21 fatalities, including Mimi and Rie.
Boer family: Cornelis Boer, age 60, Jacoba Boer-Verkerk, age 55, and Johan Boer, age 12. The Boer family died on June 23, 1943 after a bomber landed on the Wittevrouwen district. The Boer family was found the next day in their burnt-out house.
Elizabeth Dirkje Niessen-Van Wijnen: born in Ede, died in Utrecht November 6, 1944.

On November 6, 1944, Building III of the Utrecht City and Academic Hospital was hit by a bomb. A number of sisters lost their lives:
Reijntje Brummelkamp, 39 years old
Boukje Drenth, 23 years old
Teuntje Groen, 40 years old
Dieuwke Zijlstra, 30 years old
Antje Magdalena Zwaal, 35 years old

This cemetery contains the graves of three NSB members, including:

Robert van Genechten. Attorney-General at the Court of Appeal in The Hague until February 1, 1943 and later Commissioner of the province of South Holland. Van Genechten committed suicide on December 13, 1945.

Jacob Janse. Janse was attacked on 6 June 1941 during a canvassing service in the Kanaalstraat in Utrecht by a group of opponents of National Socialism. Someone stabbed him in the neck area with a knife. With this injury, he was hospitalized. A few months later he was admitted again for complications and died after an operation.

The cemetery also contains the grave of Dutch SS-Rottenführer Johan Herman Belzer, who died of his wounds on 22 October 1943.
