On November 1, 2004, after the opening ceremony of the new Polderhuis in Westkapelle, a memorial stone was unveiled in memory of the 44 people who died in the windmill "De Roos".
On October 3, 1944, a total of 47 people had sought protection in the basement of the mill against the impending bombing of the dike, including the miller Bram Theune and his wife. The bombing completely destroyed the mill and only 3 people survived the bombing.
Kornelia ( Corrie ) Janisse, one of the three survivors, was rescued from the mill as an 11-month-old baby. Her mother, who was trapped between the debris, was able to push her up but did not survive herself.
The memorial stone is a remnant of the concrete foundation of the motor house of the mill and is located in the garden of the Polderhuis. On the stone is a plaque with a text made by the survivor Corrie Janisse herself.
