Memorial 7th Armoured Villers-Bocage

The Battle of Villers-Bocage saw the British 22nd Armoured Brigade lose about two dozen tanks and other vehicles to the Tigers of Michael Wittman's 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion. Although German publicists exaggerated Wittman's role (previously decorated by Hitler for 117 tanks destroyed on the Russian front), there is no disputing the success of his outnumbered force against inferior equipment.

The memorial on the main road into town from Caen reads:

"Remember
with pride and gratitude
those of the 7th Armoured Division
who fought and died here
for freedom on 13th June 1944"
