Motoyasu Bridge

Of all the bridges in Hiroshima, this bridge was closest to the hypocenter of the Aug. 9, 1945, atomic bombing. The bridge remained largely intact and was not replaced by the current bridge until 1992. Photo 1 dates from January 1947 and shows a group of Dutch soldiers on the already repaired bridge. This group was a guard unit in charge of repatriating Japanese prisoners from the Dutch East Indies.
