On the 28.06.1942, as Operation Blau set into motion, Oberstleutnant Kohlhaas advanced with the lead elements of his Bataillon (namely the 11. Kompanie). Their goal was to take a railroad bridge over the Tim river intact, one which would be decisive for the further advance of the Division. After destroying a Soviet armoured train that was tasked with defending it, the bridge was seized in a swift and violent action. The 11. Kompanie furthermore went on to crush the Soviets on the eastern bank of the river and advance about 2 km past the bridge until they were halted by fierce opposing resistance. They then occupied an important hill nearby.

Unfortunately however disaster would strike as Luftwaffe bombers would attack this unit by mistake. A total of 23 German soldiers would either die or later succumb to injuries sustained in this attack, the latter group including Oberstleutnant Kohlhaas himself. However, for his important and decisive action, he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross shortly before his death. The bridge that he captured would subsequently be christened the “Oberstleutnant-Kohlhaas-Bridge”.

According to Scherzer as Major.
