Royal Winnipeg Rifles, R.C.I.C.

On February 16, the troops of the Royal Winnipeg Regiment were taken with Kangaroos (Canadian armoured personnel carrier (APC)) to their targets in the vicinity of Essen at 07:30 am. The companies reached their targets at 5 p.m.
The whole area was heavily shelled by the enemy and despite the troops being relocated in Kangaroos, there were several casualties. One of them was William Wilfred Alto, who died at the age of 34.
