Biography
Alfred Matern entered the Wehrmacht voluntarily on April 10th, 1934 and was attached to Infanterie-Regiment 22.
According to the Volksbund, Alfred Matern died on February 26th, 1946 in a hospital in Insterburg. Other sources give the date of March 26ht, 1945.

Awarded for his success in resisting Soviet attacks while positioned on the Mischkino Heights (south and north of the Wolchowstroj-Mga road) during the time period 22.07.-14.08.1943. He particularly distinguished himself on the 12.08.1943, when the Soviets broke into his sector in platoon strength. In response Oberfeldwebel Matern retook all the lost trenches in a short and violent close combat action.
