    Alfred Matern entered the Wehrmacht voluntarily on April 10th, 1934 and was attached to Infanterie-Regiment 22.

    According to the Volksbund, Alfred Matern died on February 26th, 1946 in a hospital in Insterburg. Other sources give the date of March 26ht, 1945.

In response Oberfeldwebel Matern retook all the lost trenches in a short and violent close combat action.
