"During the operations near Arnhem, Corporal Munro took over duties of the Intelligence Sergeant when the latter was wounded on 22nd September 1944. On this and subsequent days he was indefatigable in seeking information about the enemy. In doing so he went out repeatedly by himself on reconnaissances in the most exposed parts of the area, under continuous sniper and machine gun fire. On 25th September 1944 when the general evacuation had been ordered Corporal Munro carried out a particularly hazardous recce during which he discovered that the enemy had laid fixed line machine gun fire on the road which was to be used. With complete disregard for personal danger he searched for and found an alternative route thus avoiding many casualties during the withdrawal. When the battalion moved out he acted as guide and despite pitch darkness and intense enemy shelling led it through thick and battered woods to reach the appointed rendezvous at the correct time. The success of the evacuation in this sector was largely due to the courage and coolness under fire displayed by this NCO."
