Biography

William was born on April 11 1915 in Montreal, the son of Lieutenant Reginald Basil Hingston (deceased) and Berthe Hingston of Montreal. He was married on July 25 1942 with Dorothy Bernice Hingston nee Gaskill of Nainamo British Columbia and their daughter was Barbara Eileen Hingston (1943).

He was a clerk and member of the Roman Catholic Church. He spoke English and French and his sports were skiing, tennis and boxing and his hobbies were reading and sketching.

He enlisted on August 1 1940 in Montreal and he went then for the first time on December 16 from Canada to the UK and he returned on October 2 1941 to Canada. He went thereafter on May 10 1944 overseas again to the UK and he went afterwards on September 18 1944 to NW Europe.

William was killed in action Tuesday September 19 1944 age 29, the next day after his dropping in Holland, during operation Market Garden. He was temporarily buried then in Oosterbeek before being reburied on September 20 1945 at the Airborne War Cemetery in Oosterbeek.

He was member of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps and served as a CanLoan Officer with the South Staffordshire Regiment (British).
