Biography

Flying Officer
Royal Canadian Air Force
442 Sqdn.

In the dogfight with the Fw 190A-8 of Leutnant Hans Wulff (25), the Spitfire IX, MK420 of Flying Officer David A. Brigden of the Canadian 442 (Caribou) Squadron was hit so badly that he had to make an emergency landing. The battle had taken place during the major German New Year's air raid Operation Bodenplatte. With lowered landing gear, Brigden tried to fly into a piece of arable land between the Rouwkuilenweg and the Steegsbroek in Ysselsteyn, not far from the high-voltage line to Weverslo. On landing the Spitfire flipped over and caught fire, killing Brigden. After the crash, the Spitfire largely burned out. About two hours later, Brigden's remains were collected by British soldiers.
