Flying Officer
Royal Canadian Air Force
153 (R.A.F.) Sqdn
Brodie was flying as navigator of a bomber aircraft which took part in an attack on Bottrop. The target had been bombed succesfully, but whilst on the homeward flight, and still over enemy territory, the aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter. Combat was immediately joined, and owing to fine crew co-operation the Rear Gunner was succesful in shooting down the enemy aircraft in flames, despite the fact that the bomber aircraft had already been set on fire by the attack.
It was due very largely to Brodie’s coolness and skill that the Captain was able to bring the blazing aircraft over the Allied lines before ordering the crew to bale out.
There are no ascertain details as to the cause of Brodie’s death, but his body was discovered and taken into the care of no. 52 Mobile Field Hospital, Royal Canadian Air Force.
