On December 23, 1944 at 10:23h, Avro Lancaster Mk III PB523 of 582 Squadron departed Little Staughton from England in bad weather for a bombing mission on Cologne (Germany).
The aircraft was hit, after which five crew members jumped from the plane.
Captain Thomas flew on with the injured W/O Frederick Campbell to reach liberated territory. Both were killed in the crash at 1:15 p.m. in Opitter. Frederick Campbell had been married for barely 14 days.
