Awarded for his actions in the late summer of 1943. In this time his parent unit, the 86. Infanterie-Division, was locked in combat with 6 Soviet divisions in the area around Isbitschni. Michaelis’s Grenadier-Regiment 184 alone was up against 3 Soviet divisions and a tank regiment with 30 M3 lend-lease tanks. On the 4th day of the attack in particular the Regiment came close to being overrun by the numerous enemy break-ins and breakthroughs. However each of these were dealt with under the outstanding leadership of Michaelis, whose soldiers destroyed one enemy tank after another. It was thanks to the bravery of Michaelis and his reserve Kompanie that the attacking enemy infantry could be routed and a major enemy penetration sealed off on this day.
