Johann Michalak was called for service in the Reichs Arbeitsdienst (RAD) on October 1st, 1935. He saw active service in Poland in 1939, France in 1940 and the Central Eastern Front 1941/42. He was wounded twice – the first time being on February 5th, 1942 near Akatova to the east of Gshatsk and the second time on September 3rd, 1942 near Upolosy also to the east of Gshatsk whilst his Battalion was detached and under the command of Infanterie-Regiment 461 in the same Division. This latter wounding was sufficiently serious to ensure he never saw active service again in WW II. On his recovery he was posted Gen.Komp.Grenadier-Ersatz-Bataillon 7, a training and replacement unit, until the end of the war which he survived.

1st December 1937: Gefretier;
1st January 1941: Feldwebel;
1st December 1941: Oberfeldwebel.
