Schubach’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…
”SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach, Commander III./SS-Totenkopf-Pz.Gren.Rgt. 1, received the orders on the 12.03.1943 to venture to Tscherkasskaja Losowaja (10km north of Kharkov) over Bolschaja Danilowka, Ssorokowka on the main road from Kharkov to Tschuguyev.
As the 12.03.1943 began, SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach reached Ssorokowka at around midnight, where they bumped into strong enemy resistance. In bitter night fighting they threw the enemy back and, on the 13.03.1943, rolled up the strong enemy positions along the Roschanka stream to the main road into Kharkov. He waited ready at Roganj for orders to assault Tschuguyev.
At the beginning of 14.03.1943 SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach, in collaboration with the I./SS-Totenkopf-Pz.Rgt. 3, threw the enemy off the western heights of Kamenaja Jaruga and out of the village itself. The road bridge in the southern part of Kamenaja Jaruga, over the Studenok stream, was destroyed by the enemy. The Pioneers thus had to create the means for tanks, vehicles and heavy weapons to cross.
Despite the lack of support from heavy weapons, tanks or artillery support, SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach nonetheless decided on his own initiative to push towards Tschuguyev, penetrating the enemy positions around 18:00 hours. The element of surprise was achieved perfectly, and they began fighting for northwest part of the city in difficult street combat. In violent fighting on the approaches to the Donez, they blocked the streets to the southwestern and north of the city and also the bridge over the Donez River. Then in the city the hidden enemy finally emerged and the Russian batteries were taken in hand to hand fighting, then turned and immediately used against the enemy.
SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach has through his own decisions and through his personal outstanding courage prevented the escape of strong enemy forces from Kharkov to the southeast, and thereafter also took away their possibility of escape over the Donez. In the course of this cool headed push onto Tschuguyev his battalion captured and/or destroyed:
- 20 tanks
- 2 x 21cm guns
- 25 guns between 7.62 & 12.2cm caliber
- 47 light vehicles
- 14 prime movers
- Numerous machine guns, small arms, aircraft bombs and diesel fuel supplies
SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach became heavily wounded in the house fighting around Tschuguyev during the night. However, he remained with his battalion until the city was taken.
I please ask that SS-Sturmbannführer Schubach receive the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross in recognition of his heroic courage and in appreciation of his decisive actions."
