On the 03.02.1945 the XXVIII. Armee-Korps began its attack to link up with 3. Panzer-Armee, moving in the direction of Neukuhren-Pobethen. On the 06.02.1945 Pollmann led his Regiment into a house to house fight for Thierenberg, all while fighting at the front with his troops. After making it close to the fortified church, the attack started to stall. On his own initiative, and without contact with the Division, Pollmann independently decided to lead the attached Pionier-Bataillon in a wide flanking movement in order to force a decision. This surprise thrust worked and Thierenberg was soon under German control.
The next day Pollmann also managed to capture the Soviet blocking position at the Thierenberg mill in a flank attack. With this the German troops fighting in Samland were finally able to reach 3. Panzer-Armee, and in the process the Soviet 91st Guards Rifle Division was cut off by the German advance. For his actions during this time Pollmann would receive the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.
