- Awarded on:

Awarded for two feats of arms achieved on the western front in late 1944. The first one took place on the 30.10.1944. At 05:30 on this day Bartel personally led 25 volunteers from his Bataillon in a surprise attack against Hill 526 (located 1 km south of Nompatelize). Bartel and his men managed to take and then hold the hill until being relieved.
Bartel went on to distinguish himself in the Andlau-Eichhofen area on the 29.11.1944. As the 708. Volksgrenadier-Division was launching its own attack the Allies thrust from Hohwald towards the east and managed to capture Andlau. This created a danger that the German frontline would be rolled up. As other German infantry retreated, Hauptmann Bartel gathered up the currently available forces from his Bataillon and threw the Allies back while inflicting heavy losses. Shortly afterwards the Allies launched another attack from the north that penetrated into Eichhofen before carrying on further to the south. In a particularly energetic display of leadership, Bartel managed to also eject this enemy force with his Kampfgruppe and then chase it back to Mittelbergheim. By this a breakthrough was prevented.
