Grenadier-Regiment 422 was deployed to the west of Siniavino during the Third Battle of Lake Ladoga. Fighting in this sector began on the 09.08.1943, and the ground became particularly hotly contested at a frontline salient to the southwest of the former village of Posselok 6. This salient was dubbed the “Finger”. It was eventually lost to the attacking Soviet forces, and after this they attacked and breached the blocking position located in the vicinity of the Finger on the 14.08.1943. The Germans failed to hold the position on this day, however a counterattack launched by the Regiment’s Radfahr-Kompanie ultimately managed to retake both the blocking position and the Finger. During this counterattack Oberfeldwebel Baumann attacked a broken-in Soviet force and eliminated 2 hostile companies with his men. He would subsequently be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
