Schünemann's outstanding leadership of his Regiment was the decisive factor which enabled the city of Polozk to be taken by a strike from the north on the 15.07.1941. This in turn opened up the road for the LVII. Armee-Korps (mot) to advance towards Newel and Velikiye Luki. He was thus awarded the Knight's Cross in recognition of this achievement.
