During the defensive battle of Lake Ladoga, Oberleutnant Wechsung particularly distinguished himself. Over the days of battle he and his men were able to clean up a Soviet breakthrough, retake the command post of the neighbouring Kompanie and destroy a Soviet battalion staff in the process. For these victorious actions he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
