The following wartime excerpt describes why Picker received the Knight’s Cross…
“The night of 07.08.1941, during which the Russian 12th Army searched for a way to break through to the East, was filled with crises. The most dangerous of these was on the right wing of Gruppe Picker, where the troops positioned on Hill 186 found themselves bypassed by elements of the attacking Russian force, which pressed on towards the Regimental command post.
Oberst Picker sealed off this Russian penetration, and in doing so he brought the attack of the Russian 12th Army to a halt. As a result of his efforts, the encirclement ring around the enemy remained unbroken and the next day the trapped enemy troops could finally be wiped out.”
