Bracher’s Knight’s Cross recommendation was written in two parts by his divisional commander. The first was written on the 19.08.1943, and it reads as follows…
“On the 08.08.1943, during the fighting southwest of Vyazma [specifically the Ssnopot position], the enemy achieved a penetration in the sector of the left neighbouring division with tanks and infantry forces. The main thrust of this group made its way into the flank and rearward positions of Bracher’s Regiment.
After all radio and telephone communications had been knocked out, Oberst Bracher began to remove Kompanien and smaller units from the main frontline on his own initiative. He personally led them in a counterthrust and inflicted heavy losses upon the foe.
A major gap in the Division’s front was closed, and with this a major crisis had been mastered. This was solely on account of the personal bravery and decisiveness demonstrated by this highly regarded regimental commander, who has been wounded five times up until now.
The second part was written on the 21.08.1943, and it reads as follows…
“On the 17.08.1943 the enemy attacked the right wing of the Division with tanks and infantry, and they achieved a penetration.
Oberst Bracher personally led reserve forces under heavy enemy fire, commenced a counterattack, retook a previously lost village and in doing so regained a commanding piece of terrain for the Division’s front.
With this Bracher has mastered another dangerous situation along the Division’s front through his exemplary devotion to duty, and in the process he denied the enemy the chance to commence a new assault from a commanding point of the terrain.”
According to Fellgiebel he is Dr. Agra.
