- Second World War (1939-1945)
- Rank:
- Oberst der Reserve (Colonel of Reserves)
- Unit:
- Kommandeur, Grenadier-Regiment 96, 32. Infanterie-Division
- Awarded on:
- September 17th, 1944
On the night of the 12./13.08.1944 the 32. Infanterie-Division was forced to evacuate Modohn. On the 19.08.1944 the Division repulsed Soviet attacks near Saliniecki, south of Trusli and in the Berzini area. On the 21.08.1944 a total of 6 rifle divisions attacked the Division, and this number would rise to 8 on the following day. Another 4 joined their ranks on the 28.08.1944. However despite this massive expenditure of force they were unable to break through the Division’s defenses. This was in no small part due to Bassewitz’s steadfast leadership during this time, and for this he would later be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
