Bauer’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…
“SS-Obersturmführer Bauer, SS-Btl. 506, succeeded in blocking and holding the enemy’s important supply road along the route Serrig—Panzhaus for 3 days against the enemy’s strong tank-supported attacks. On the 27.02.1945 the enemy launched their 8th such attempt to open up the Serrig—Panzhaus road, and this time they managed to achieve a penetration with the support of a powerful artillery barrage and numerous tanks.
Realizing the threat this posed, Bauer gathered up his last messengers and stormed ahead of them against the broken-in enemy with cries of ‘Hurra’. Although his men were by now exhausted by the constant shelling and hostile attacks, they took heart from their commander’s example and followed him into battle. The enemy was engaged in close-quarter combat and forced to pull back to their jump-off position after losing 3 tanks to Panzerfausts. As such the enemy once again failed in their goal to open up the Serrig—Panzhaus road.
The success here is solely attribute to the independent decisiveness, excellent leadership and exemplary bravery of SS-Obersturmführer Bauer. Thanks to his efforts the enemy was thwarted in their efforts to reach the open ground east of Panzhaus and thereby thrust into the deep left flank of those friendly elements fighting further to the north.
It is also advised that he be promoted to SS-Hauptsturmführer.”
To this was added a comment by the commanding general of the LXXXII. Armee-Korps, General der Infanterie Hahm…
“This independently conducted deed of bravery by SS-Obersturmführer Bauer on the 27.02.1945 was of extreme importance for the holding of the southern flank of the enemy’s Ockfen bridgehead (Saar).
The conditions for the award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross for this go-getting officer are totally fulfilled.
The recommendation is warmly endorsed.”
