Feldwebel Josef Beck joined the Wehrmacht after finishing school in 1936.
In 1942 he was listed as part of the Infanterie-Regiment 320.
In late 1944 Beck participated in the Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein on the Western Front which led to the Battle of the Bulge.
His division, 212. Volks-Grenadier-Division, served on the southern front. After taking control of the city of Echternach, 212.VGD confronted the 10th US Armored Division and was forced to release the city that had just been captured. The division now controls only a few vital bridges.
On February 17, 1945, 212.VGD launched a counterattack and managed to control several areas in Menningen. It was here that Beck showed his outstanding abilities as a platoon commander - especially in the fierce combats around Minden.
In the book "Die Träger des Ritterkreuzes des Eisernen Kreuzes 1939-1945" by Walther-Peer Fellgiebel, it is mentioned that Beck's rank when he received Ritterkreuz was Feldwebel der Reserve.
