The following wartime excerpt describes why Blumenroth was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“On the early morning of the 29.09.1941 the enemy launched a regimental-sized attack against the positions of the forwardly-emplaced 3. Kompanie. At around 06:00 the enemy attack took on a threatening form for the weak yet bravely defending Kompanie. Clearly recognizing this situation, Unteroffizier Blumenroth led his squad forwards in a counterthrust into the enemy’s left flank on his own initiative. Himself with a machine-pistol, and his squad with MG and rifles, they conducted a classic fire and movement maneuver into the enemy. In this way he succeeded in throwing back the enemy’s ranks of riflemen back to the north and northeast following a nerve-wracking firefight. The outstanding defensive success of the Kompanie, which was of great importance in the context of the Regiment’s trying defensive combat, can be solely attributed to his determined and courageous attack.”
