The following wartime excerpt describes why Blümke was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“During the middle of October Oberst Friedrich Blümke (whose Grenadier Regiment belongs to the Hessian-Saar 197. Infanterie-Division, which was named in the Wehrmachtbericht of the 11.10.1943) prevented a large-scale enemy breakthrough attempt on the central sector of the Eastern front, northeast of Orsha. He brought the divisional reserve forwards and led it in a counterattack despite being hindered by a not-yet fully healed wound. This counterattack succeeded in throwing back the broken-in Russians.”
