The following wartime excerpt describes why Brandt was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 21.07.1941 Leutnant der Reserve Brandt received orders to advance to the hill near the Gorki church with his Kompanie. This was to be a supporting effort for the larger offensive that aimed to force the Dnieper crossing near Mogilev. After he had taken this hill at around 15:20 following a hard fight, he decided to advance ahead to the Dnieper bridge at the southern edge of Mogilev. He took the bridge under control as the first man of his Kompanie. He then held the bridge against a great enemy superiority for over 24 hours. The result of Leutnant Brandt’s bravery was the success of the overall plan and the encirclement of strong enemy forces.”
