The following wartime excerpt describes why Casper was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 09.09.1941 Oberst Casper and his Regiment broke through the outer defensive ring of Petersburg following hard combat northwest of Krasnogvardeisk. Fighting as the attacking spearhead, he and his unit reached the distant daily objective (vital for the continuation of the XXXXI. Armee-Korps’ operations) in the late evening hours. Recognizing the enemy’s weak spot at a critical moment, he immediately dispatched a further Bataillon to the area and rushed to the foremost line. From here he inspired his soldiers to achieve an eventual decisive success.”
