Shortly after the formation of the Demyansk pocket the Germans scrambled to create a new defense line on the NW side of the pocket. On the 26.02.1942 the II./Infanterie-Regiment 502, commanded by Oberleutnant Lücken, entered the enemy occupied village of Gorshizy. Despite their best efforts the men of the Bataillon were unable to capture the north and west parts of the village. However the conduct of Lücken and his troops were nonetheless deemed to be outstanding enough that Lücken would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross even so.
