The following wartime excerpt explains why Fitzek would receive the Knight’s Cross…

“As a Zugführer in a Grenadier-Regiment from the German Danube area, Feldwebel Fitzek led his men forward in a counterthrust against an enemy attack launched against an important position east of Orel (as reported in the Wehrmachtbericht of the 12.06.1943). He ejected the far numerically superior Soviets from the hill position while at the head of his Grenadiers and eliminated a reinforced Bataillon in the process.”
