On the 14.10.1944 the Soviets launched an attack against the German positions near Gnoijno after a two-hour preparatory barrage. They managed to break into the German front south of the III./Grenadier-Regiment 19 "List”, and thus threatened it from the right flank.
Obergefreiter Tummer, No. 1 at a light infantry gun, immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. Acting on his own initiative, he turned his gun to the south and commenced direct fire onto the new hostile forces. Following this he gathered all available soldiers and used them to launch a counterattack. In bitter close combat the broken-in Soviets were ejected, and Tummer helped establish a new defence in order to complete the victory.
For this act, by which an even larger rupturing of the German front was prevented, he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class on the same day. This was later upgraded to the Knight's Cross.
