At the start of February 1944 Major Ebeling commanded a Kampfgruppe of the 58. Infanterie-Division, which had the mission of covering the Armee’s withdrawal to a new front. While west of Luga he and his men were encircled by the Soviets after tough defensive fighting. On the 13.02.1944 Major Ebeling broke through the Soviet encirclement ring with his Bataillon and eventually captured the village of Sarjabinka. Following this he launched an assault on his own initiative against a decisive piece of high ground for the following Kampfgruppe. By refusing to delay the attack he also forfeited friendly artillery support, however despite the great enemy superiority he and his men overcame the odds.

Ebeling’s actions ensured that the breakout of these invaluable forces succeeded while simultaneously allowing for the creation of new defensive positions in this sector of the front. Ebeling would later receive the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.

At the start of February 1945 Oberstleutnant Ebeling and his Kampfgruppe were deployed in northern Samland, where their mission was to hold open the entrance to the Curonian Spit against the attacking Soviet forces. Although the Kampfgruppe’s right flank was totally open it managed to hold its ground in the heavy combat, which was centred around the village of Pobethen. It was able to retake the village that had been temporarily lost to the Soviets via a counterthrust despite the very unfavourable circumstances. Ebeling would later receive the Oakleaves for his leadership during this engagement.

763rd Award.
