"For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 79th Infantry Division during World War II. When his regiment was savagely attacked by enemy armored units, General Greer personally reconnoitered the situation and moved his command post to a position affording maximum observation, although exposed to constant enemy artillery fire and aerial attack. Despite a painful wound received in this action, General Greer remained in this position until the enemy attack was completely repulsed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."
