Rudi Schüßler went into the army because of the conscription, and went into the army on the 29th of August, 1939. He saw action for the first time in Luxembourg, fought his way through France, and fought at the Marne and in Rheims. After this he was part of the occupation forces that were stationed in France, until he went to Russia on the 22nd of June, 1941 for Operation Barbarossa and saw action in (amongst others) Smolensk, Bryansk and Moscow.
On the 25th of December 1942, Rudi Schüßler, together with Uffz. Linz died during an attack by an Russian "Stalin organ".
