"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Leader, attached to the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, 4 and 10 October 1944. Although wounded in the hand by hostile small-arms fire during an attack against a strongly held position in the vicinity of the ?Five Sisters', First Lieutenant Jones directed the fire of friendly tanks against the enemy until his platoon was able to move in and take its objective with a minimum of casualties. With the movements of his platoon seriously hampered by Japanese snipers on 10 October, he boldly stood behind a tank turret and effectively directed telling fire on enemy positions until he was mortally wounded. His aggressive fighting spirit and outstanding courage in the face of grave peril were contributing factors in the success of these operations and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
